Adopt-a-Tree Program Information
What Does It Mean to Adopt a Street Tree?
The main focus of our adopt-a-tree program is watering. According to NYC Parks Department, “watering is the single most important thing you can do for your street tree.” Greenpoint has received well over 600 new trees in the past 5 years, all of which are susceptible to stress and even death if they do not receive enough water, especially during the hot summer months.
As an adopter, you will receive:
1 Tree Gator watering bag per tree
1 bucket, soil cultivator, and set of gloves
Training and support from Greenpoint Tree Corps, including volunteer office hours
You will be responsible for:
Selecting a young tree to adopt with trunk diameter of 6 inches or less
Watering the tree 1–4 times per month in June, July, and August
Stewarding the tree bed by removing trash and weeds and cultivating the soil
Reporting your tree care activities in a simple Google Form
How Long Will the Program Last?
This program is operating for the 2021 summer season, kicking off in June and wrapping up in early September. Of course, we encourage adopters to continue stewarding their trees as long as they wish, and you get to keep all of your tree care supplies.
